Toothbrushes

Electric toothbrushes are easier to use and more effective in removing plaque around your teeth. You are also at less risk of gum recession and tooth wear. Many people who use manual brushes brush way too hard.

You don’t need to get a costly brush with hundreds of settings. It’s not complicated. A simple, good-quality brush made by a reputable company is all you need.

Best for travel and the environment - Our top pick

SURI Sustainable Electric Toothbrush - £75.00 £63.75 with code “NOVASMILES” at checkout

Best manual toothbrush

If you want to use a manual brush, consider a bamboo brush to reduce your plastic waste. Avoid the soft bristle brushes as they often do very little to clean your teeth.

Ecoshoots bamboo brushes - £4.95 for a pack of 5

Water Flossers

Water flossers are extremely effective in cleaning in between your teeth as an alternative to string floss.

Especially if you wear braces and have bridges or implants.

The best water flossers to use are from established brands and the ones that have been clinically tried and tested.

Toothpaste

Like the brushes themselves, this shouldn’t be too complicated. As long as your toothpaste has the right amount of fluoride in it, you’ll be okay. (For adults, at least 1450ppm).

Many brands advertise whitening effects, but toothpaste can’t do much to whiten your teeth. Feel free to experiment with which one you like the feel of most.

For sensitive and worn-down teeth, the recommendations below have additional benefits.
