Laifen Wave Electric Toothbrush Review: A Dentist's Thoughts (2025)

As a dentist, I understand the importance of choosing the right toothbrush for maintaining oral health, and like I say in every electric toothbrush review… It does not matter which brush you pick!

As long as you find one that inspires you to brush your teeth properly twice a day with good technique, that’s enough to keep your teeth clean and healthy. That being said, a good electric toothbrush makes it easy to use, and this review of the Laifen Wave is based on my professional insights and personal experience.

This brush was sent to me by Laifen, so I did not pay for it. This article contains affiliate links; however, all opinions are my genuine thoughts after trialling the toothbrush. Laifen have no editorial say in this review. - Dr Zaeem Jafri BDS

In Summary

The Laifen Wave is a brush we genuinely enjoy using. The design feels sleek and premium, it is extremely powerful, and it leaves your mouth feeling properly clean after every use.

It is also very well priced (£99) for what it offers. Its cleaning motion is unlike anything else on the market, and the addition of an aeroplane mode is a thoughtful touch for anyone who travels regularly.

There are drawbacks. It relies on a dedicated charging cable rather than simple USB-C, which is easy to misplace. The lack of a pressure sensor is a bigger concern, particularly for people with sensitivity or gum recession. The motion of the brush head also takes a little time to get used to.

We hope these points are refined in future versions because with a few minor improvements, this could become one of our favourite brushes overall.

★★★★★ - A pressure sensor would make it 4-stars

Design and Ergonomics

The packaging of the Laifen Wave is clean, well presented and has that same satisfying attention to detail you get when opening a new iPhone. It sets the tone straight away.

The brush itself has a simple and intuitive interface. There is a single button which we really like, although double pressing to change modes can feel slightly awkward at times. It has a solid weight in the hand that gives it a premium feel, though it may add a little extra bulk for travel.

The bristles are comfortable and feel pleasant on both teeth and gums, which helps balance out the strength of the motor and makes daily brushing feel smooth and gentle despite the power behind it.

Cleaning Performance

The Laifen Wave is very powerful and it leaves your teeth feeling exceptionally clean. Its cleaning system combines sonic vibrations with an oscillating brush head, which, in theory, gives you the strengths of both Philips Sonicare and Oral-B in one brush.

The oscilating head isn’t rotary like the Oral-B; it provides a sweeping motion to mimic the modified bass technique reccomended by clinical research for effective manual toothbrushing.

At the moment, there is no publicly available clinical evidence to show whether this combination offers an advantage over other electric brushes. What we do know from multiple studies is that electric toothbrushes, in general, clean better than manual brushes.

Still, there is no detailed research that proves one type of electric brushing system is superior to another.

Even without that evidence, the daily clean from the Laifen Wave feels thorough, consistent and noticeably stronger than many other brushes in this price range.

The Laifen Wave is officially recommended by the American Dental Association.

Key Features

The Laifen Wave includes several useful features, such as:

  • A sonic motor that reaches up to 66,000 vibrations per minute (the default setting is 26,000 and high frequency mode goes up to 66,000)

  • A 60-degree oscillating brush head that creates a sweeping action

  • Three programmable brushing modes

  • A brushing timer that can be customised to suit your preferred brushing duration

  • A 30-second pacing reminder to keep you on track

  • A self-wake function that activates when you pick up the brush, so you can start brushing with a single press

  • A connected app that allows you to customise the brush settings and adjust your brushing preferences

It is worth noting that the timer features are not enabled by default. You need to activate and adjust them through the app before they will work.

The app connects seamlessly with the brush whenever I’ve needed to use it.

To get the full power of the brushing motor, you need to activate high-frequency mode in the app, though we don’t think it is really necessary. Maybe if you’re trying to remove stubborn surface staining from your teeth, but if it’s that bad, we recommend seeing a dentist or hygienist at that point.

The Laifen Wave uses a clear colour-coded indicator to show the remaining battery level.

  • 50 to 100 %: steady green light

  • 20 to 50 %: steady yellow light

  • 10 to 20 %: steady red light

  • 1 to 10 %: red light that blinks every half second

  • 0 %: red light continues blinking every half second until the motor stops

It is a simple and effective way to keep track of the battery without needing to check the app.

Travel-Friendly Features

The Laifen Wave has a few useful travel-friendly features.

  • Backpack mode disables the self-wake function, so the brush will not activate while you are moving around.

  • Aeroplane mode locks the power button to prevent accidental switching on during flights.

  • The battery life is also excellent, lasting up to 30 days on a full charge for mode 2 and 18 days for mode 3.

There is a travel case available, although I have not tested it yet. I will update this section once I have had a chance to use it properly.

One drawback for travel is the charging system. The brush relies on a dedicated charging cable rather than USB-C, which means you need to pack a specific cable that is easy to misplace. USB-C integration would make it far more convenient.

The handle is also the heaviest of all the brushes I have tested. It may not be a major issue for most people, but it is something to be aware of if you prefer a lighter brush for travelling.

Sustainability

The sustainability credentials of the Laifen Wave are mixed. There is no recycling programme for brush heads or the brush itself, and it is not clear from the website whether the brush can be repaired.

The packaging is a positive point. It is biodegradable, contains no plastic sleeve and around 90 per cent of the materials are recyclable. Laifen also avoids including a power adaptor in the box to reduce unnecessary waste.

Price / Money-back Guarentee

I love companies that offer guarantees; if you’re not sure about the Laifen Wave, you can buy it and test it out for 30 days and simply give it back if you don’t like it. As long as the brush has not been damaged, Laifen will give you a full refund.

The Laifen Wave costs:

  • £99 for the Stainless Steel and Aluminium versions

  • £79 for the ABS Plastic version

Replacement brush heads cost $26.99 for a pack of 6 and $15.99 for a pack of 3. I can’t find a GBP version on either Amazon or on their website.

The brush also comes with a 2-year warranty preiod.

Final Thoughts

Overall, the Laifen Wave is a very impressive toothbrush. It is a shame that it does not include a pressure sensor or USB-C charging, as both would make a meaningful difference to day-to-day use. Even so, if you want the most powerful toothbrush available with a genuinely unique design, this is an excellent choice.

Our overall verdict: Buy the Laifen Wave if you want the most powerful electric toothbrush with a unique design

How to use an electric toothbrush properly

How to use the Laifen Wave toothbrush properly

To get the best results from any electric toothbrush, you need to use the correct technique, and each manufacturer recommends a slightly different approach. With the Laifen Wave, the key is to let the brush do the work for you.

  1. Apply a small pea-sized amount of toothpaste on the brush head

  2. Place it gently at the gum line of one tooth.

  3. Turn the brush on

  4. Hold it still for one to two seconds before moving on to the next tooth

Avoid scrubbing back and forth, as this stops the brush head from working as intended and can lead to overbrushing. Use light pressure only. If you press too hard, you will reduce the effectiveness of the motion.

It may feel like you are not doing much, but this still, controlled technique is exactly how the brush is designed to clean your teeth properly.
