Oral-B Genius X Review

Dentist-Tested Smart Brushing That Actually Improves Technique? (2026)

Medically reviewed by Dr Zaeem Jafri BDS on 27th April 2026

It’s not easy to select the best electric toothbrush that’s going to treat your teeth with the care you really need. There’s a lot of marketing that promises all sorts of miracle tech to improve your dental health, but really, the best way to see if a brush does a good job of cleaning your teeth is seeing if it does a good job for someone else.

I’ve tested dozens of dental products over the years, including some of the best electric toothbrushes available in the UK, and despite all that, the Oral-B Genius X remains one of my favourites. The affordable price, the smart tech inserted in the app, and the range of features on offer make it a solid option for most people. Over a two-week trial, I pushed it to its limits to find out if it still stands up to the best on the market.

This article contains affiliate links; however, all the opinions are my genuine thoughts after trialling the toothbrush 3 weeks at home and abroad

The Oral-B Genius X

The Oral-B Genius X released in June 2019. It’s slightly more affordable than many of the top-tier options in the roster, offering a similar design ethos and smart-app functionality, but without the over-complicated additions that can often put people off. It features:

  • A pressure sensor and two-minute timer

  • Smartphone app compatibility with dedicated tracking and dental guidance

  • Six dedicated cleaning modes

  • A price increase from £95 to £110

In Summary

This is a genuinely effective smart toothbrush that bridges the gap between traditional and high-tech brushing. It’s powerful, data-driven, and great for improving habits—but not the gentlest option for sensitive gums.

★★★★★

Best for: Every day cleaning with a smart boost
Key feature: AI-powered brushing tracking
Battery life: ~14–18 days (real-world testing)

Pros

  •  Excellent cleaning performance

  • AI feedback genuinely improves technique with useful guidance and advice from Oral-B’s in-house dentists

  • Great travel case

Cons

  • Loud compared to newer models

  • Pressure sensor could be more sensitive

  • App feels less useful long-term

  • Not ideal for very sensitive gums

We combine clinical dental expertise with real-world product testing. Every toothbrush we review is used daily in a home setting for a minimum of 3 weeks by Owen, who has tested hundreds of products for some of the biggest lifestyle and health magazines in the country. In his reviews, he’s looking out for cost, cleaning power, tech features and useability, and if this lines up with Dr Jafri’s clinical opinions.

How We Tested The Oral-B Genius X

We tested the Oral-B Genius X over 3 weeks, brushing twice daily with a standard Colgate cleaning toothpaste.

We assessed:

  • Plaque removal

  • Gum comfort

  • Battery life

  • Noise levels

  • Ease of use

  • App usefulness

Design and Ergonomics

Out of the box, the Genius X feels premium without being overly flashy. I tend not to like the large, weighty handles of premium brushes, but this felt comfortable and solid in my hand, reminding me of the unmistakable Oral-B feel — functional rather than luxurious.

In the box, I got one brush, a spare brush head, a travel case and charging cable. The travel case is a standout for me, as it’s one of the few we’ve tested that actually feels useful rather than an afterthought, and it made my recent trip away to Germany simple and easy.

Cleaning Performance

This is where the Genius X excels. The oscillating round head delivers a noticeably deeper clean than manual brushing, and even compared to entry-level electric models, and through my two-week trial, I noticed that debris between my teeth was being cleaned out more thoroughly.

I enjoy the rounded, smaller brush heads to get a target on each tooth individually. I have a particularly sensitive wisdom tooth on the bottom right side of my mouth, and often struggle to clean it properly, but the smaller head allowed me to get right into it and clean it properly.

I selected daily clean mode for most of my testing, as more intense models tend to make my jaw ache, but the whitening buffer mode was also a good choice for achieving a more specific, intense clean on my teeth if needed after an especially coffee-heavy day.

Key Features

Speaking of the cleaning modes, the six available are, in my opinion, a bit of overkill, as it’s unlikely you’ll be rotating through each on any given day to enjoy a different cleaning experience. Most people, myself included, select one that feels right the first time it’s turned on, and stick with that.

However, the whitening mode has been useful as I prepare for my wedding day, buffing up my teeth for a dazzling smile for photos.

With all that said, the two main features on offer here are the ones you should demand from all good electric toothbrushes - a two-minute timer and a pressure sensor, which this brush has.

With the smart-app functionality (a bit more on that later) you can get warnings directly to your smartphone to let you know you need to move on to a different part of the mouth, stop or even if you’re brushing too hard. The brush itself also lets you know with minute vibration differences and an LED light on the neck of the brush.

Gum Comfort

I don’t particularly suffer from sensitive gums, but I do notice when a new brush is being a bit too grating when I test them out. The smaller brush head means that, when really focusing, you can clean along the gumline and the top of the tooth with proper precision, and you’re not actively brushing up into the gums.

In my experience, Oral-B’s brushes are often stiff but reasonably pliable, so aren’t particularly irritating to sore gums, and the pressure sensor helps to warn you off pressing too hard.

Noise Level

While quieter than many other Oral-B brushes, the Genius X suffers from a similar ailment to many other options from the brand: a noisy motor. I don’t typically mind a bit of low level noise in the morning or the evening, but it is noticeably louder than many other brushes I have tested from other brands, and is certainly something to consider.

Travel-Friendly Features

As mentioned, the travel case came in really handy during my recent trip, and I’m planning to use the Genius X when I get married, so it will feature on the sink side, and I’ll need it in top condition for the big day.

The case is quite large but stores everything within it, including the charging cable and a slot for spare brush heads, and it comes with a premium finish that I quite like. It has a UK-centric plug, so keep that in mind if you’re travelling abroad, but the battery lasts quite comfortably for three weeks, and I didn’t need to charge it up once throughout my testing.

Battery Life

Most modern toothbrushes can cope with roughly two weeks of charge, and it’s no different here. On a twice-a-day brushing routine, this should see you going for anywhere between two and three weeks, and in my entire two week testing period, I didn’t need to recharge once.

The charging cable is standard UK three-pin plug and was durable during my own testing.

Ease of Use

Oral-B are a popular brand because all its models are easy to use, simple to charge, and do a great job cleaning your teeth. In this regard, I can confirm it’s amongst the simplest brushes I’ve ever used, despite its integrated tech. Downloading and syncing the app, for some, may be a bit tricky (if you’re not very tech-literate) but for the majority of people, downloading and enjoying the app and brush will be a simple and enjoyable experience.

App Experience

The Genius X is so-called because it takes advantage of the smartphone features available on some of the most premium models. Using Bluetooth, you can sync it up to your phone to get real-time feedback on your brushing as well as guidance on your performance, with tips to change your routine and improve.

I personally don’t find much use from these high-tech features. I think it’s best to concentrate on your brushing and focus on what you’re doing rather than watching your phone screen, but it can be a useful way to spot parts of your mouth you’re not cleaning properly. It’s a fun gimmick that can certainly help, but I didn’t find much use for it personally beyond the initial use.

Price

The Genius X is a slight step down from Oral-B’s premium models, so the value for money on offer at this price point is quite obvious, in my opinion. The RRP, unlike many other products from the brand, is reasonably set at £110, and you’ll often find it quite heavily discounted during major online sales periods.

Dentist's Verdict

From a clinical perspective, this is a highly effective toothbrush.

The combination of:

  • Pressure sensor

  • Quadrant timer

  • AI tracking

…encourages better brushing habits, which is often more important than the brush itself.

However, patients with gum recession or sensitivity should start cautiously, as the brushing action is relatively intense.

Who Should Buy This?

For my money, the Oral-B Genius X is, pound-for-pound, one of the best electric toothbrushes on the market, so most people reading this, who are thinking of upgrading their brushing routine, can get a lot of joy out of it.

The £100-ish price tag might be a bit of a stretch for some, and that’s fair enough, but if you can make your budget work, it offers plenty to improve your dental health.

If you’re not particularly techy, you may not get much out of the AI smarts, but you can still use the brush without this feature and it’ll still do a stand-up job of cleaning your teeth.

Electric Toothbrush Alternatives

If the Genius X isn’t tickling your fancy, there are other brushes that are just as good or offer slightly different features that might be more in line with your needs.

The Suri 2.0, priced at £85 is a solid option for anyone looking for a brush stripped of finnicky tech extras. It only has one button on it, the power button, no additional cleaning modes, no smartphone compatibility, and the only true bit of tech in it is a UV light in the case that kills bacteria while it’s stored.

It’s sustainably made, carbon-neutral, and a wonderful option if low-fi dental care is more your speed.

From Philips’ side of the dental care battlefield, the Sonicare 6100 is an excellent alternative for a similar price. You’ll lose the AI functionality of the smartphone app , but it’s a great brush that boasts sonic pulse technology that vibrates plaque and debris off your teeth and is seen by many as a gentler brush for those who have sensitive teeth.

What Makes The Oral-B Genius X Different?

What makes the Genius X different is the access to AI-powered brushing at this price point. There aren’t many that offer this level of technical functionality for just over £100, and enjoying the below benefits is a real bonus here.

  • Real-time feedback via app

  • Works well with or without the app (a major advantage)

  • Smart pressure sensor with visual alerts

The next best thing would be something from Oral-B’s iO range, like the iO9 or iO10 but you’re paying significantly more money for those brushes to get the same level of features.

Is It Worth Buying?

This question is always difficult to answer as it’s always down to what you prioritise and how much you’re genuinely willing to spend. For me, and many of the dentists at Nova Smiles, the brush that you’ll actually use consistently is the brush that’s worth the money, but only you can decide if your budget fits.

For me, I’d say the Genius X is worth paying the £100-or-more price, because the brush itself will last several years, it will clean your teeth properly, and could even improve your technique thanks to the smartphone app.

FAQs

  • Yes—electric brushes like this remove more plaque and improve consistency.

  • Every 3 months, or sooner if bristles fray.

  • It depends on your perspective. If you want high-end top-of-the-range products, then the iO10 is the best toothbrush in Oral-B’s roster. It does cost a lot more though, so if you’ve got a budget, this is among the best options.

  • Yes—but start with Sensitive mode, as it’s quite powerful.
