Oral-B iO8 Review: A Pricey Electric Toothbrush Packed Full Of AI Smarts

Electric toothbrushes have come a long way from simple rotating heads and basic timers. The Oral-B iO8 sits firmly at the premium end of the market, promising smarter brushing through artificial intelligence, sleek design and a noticeably more refined cleaning experience. But with a price tag that makes many people pause, the obvious question is whether it truly delivers enough value to justify the cost.

Here’s a detailed, no nonsense look at what you get for your money.

Oral-B iO8

The iO8 is one of Oral-B’s premium brushes, packed full of AI smarts, modern features and travel-friendly extras. Sure, the price tag is high, but when you’ve got a brush like this, you quickly realise how much value is on offer. It’s not at the very top of t he Oral-B pyramid, so you’re not paying absolute top dollar for it, but if you’re on the hunt for something that will instantly elevate your dental cleaning, this is one of the best brushes for it.

In Summary

Easily one of the best mid-range options we’ve tested, the Oral-B iO8 is a great choice for tech-focused users who like to explore what a premium brush can offer. With Ai integration, a slender handle, and top-tier brush heads, I think you’ll find this is worth the price.

We combine clinical dental expertise with real-world product testing. Every toothbrush we review is used daily in a home setting for a minimum of 3 weeks by Owen, who has tested hundreds of products for some of the biggest lifestyle and health magazines in the country. How We Tested The Oral-B iO8

We tested the Oral-B iO8 over 3 weeks, brushing twice daily with a standard Colgate cleaning toothpaste.

We assessed:

  • Plaque removal

  • Gum comfort

  • Battery life

  • Noise levels

  • Ease of use

  • App usefulness

Design and Ergonomics

The first thing I noticed about the iO8 is how different it feels compared to older Oral-B brushes. The design is far more modern and minimal, with a smooth matte finish and a small interactive display built into the handle. It looks a bit space-age to me, and it can be a little slippery if you’re not careful, but it does look handsome.

It sits comfortably in the hand without feeling bulky. The weight is well balanced, giving it a premium feel without becoming tiring during a two minute brushing session. The magnetic charger adds to the overall polished look, replacing the clunky charging stands found on older models.

The round brush head remains compact, which helps reach tricky areas like behind molars. Overall, it feels like a thoughtful upgrade rather than a cosmetic refresh to older models.

Cleaning Performance

This is where the iO8 really earns its reputation. The cleaning action combines oscillation with gentle micro vibrations, resulting in a brushing sensation that feels smoother than traditional Oral-B models. The brush head spins on an axis, cupping each tooth to give it a thorough clean.

My teeth felt noticeably cleaner after each session, particularly along the gumline where plaque tends to build up. It strikes a good balance between power and control, making it effective without feeling aggressive.

Compared to entry level electric brushes, the difference is immediate. Compared to mid range models, it still pulls ahead, for me, thanks to its consistency and precision.

Key Features

The iO8 is packed with features, though not all will matter equally to every user.

You get multiple cleaning modes including daily clean, sensitive, gum care, intense and whitening, and switching between them is simple via the display. Many modes feel roughly the same, so I just ended up sticking with daily clean for most of my testing, while intense felt a bit too much for my teeth.

The standout feature is the AI powered tracking system. It works with the companion app to monitor how well you are brushing different areas of your mouth. Over time, it nudges you to improve technique rather than just timing.

There is also a smart pressure sensor that changes colour depending on whether you are brushing too hard, too softly or just right. It is surprisingly helpful and quickly becomes second nature.

Gum Comfort

One of the biggest improvements I found with the iO series over Oral-B’s Pro series is how gentle it feels on gums. Outside of the “intense” mode, the brush does not produce that harsh scraping sensation some electric brushes can cause. That could just be down to my teeth and preference, but most others felt comfortable.

The pressure sensor plays a big role here. If you tend to brush too hard, it immediately alerts you, helping prevent irritation and long term gum damage.

For anyone with sensitive gums or a history of overbrushing, this is a major advantage.

Noise Level

Electric toothbrush noise can be surprisingly irritating, especially early in the morning. The iO8 is noticeably quieter than older Oral-B models, but it still does produce a sound.

Instead of a loud mechanical buzzing, the sound is softer and more refined. It still makes noise, of course, but it feels less intrusive and more in line with premium expectations.

It is not silent, but it is far less likely to wake someone in the next room.

Travel-Friendly Features

The iO8 comes with a solid travel case that protects the brush and keeps things tidy. Depending on the bundle, some versions include a charging travel case, which is particularly useful for longer trips.

The brush itself is compact enough to fit easily into a wash bag, and the battery life is strong enough that you may not even need to bring the charger for shorter journeys.

One minor drawback is that replacement brush heads are a bit bulkier than standard Oral-B heads, so packing spares takes slightly more space.

Battery Life

Battery performance is strong, though not class leading. You can expect around 10 to 14 days of use on a full charge, depending on the mode you use.

Charging is quick and straightforward with the magnetic base. A full charge takes roughly three hours, which is reasonable for a brush in this category.

For most users, this means charging once every week or two, which is convenient enough for daily life.

Ease of Use

Despite all its smart features, the iO8 is easy to use right out of the box. You can ignore the app entirely and still get an excellent brushing experience, but if you want to tap into that feature, the app guides you through the process and you pick it up easily.

The display guides you through modes and gives simple feedback, including a smiley face when you have completed a good brushing session. It is a small touch, but it adds a bit of personality.

Buttons are responsive and intuitive, so there is no steep learning curve..

App Experience

The companion app is where the AI features really come into play. It tracks your brushing in real time, showing which areas you have covered and where you might be missing spots.

Over time, it builds a picture of your habits and offers suggestions to improve your routine. For some users, this level of detail will be genuinely useful, but only if you stay consistent with it.

Not everyone will stick with the app long term, but once you have developed better habits, you may find yourself relying on the brush alone.

It is a great feature, but not essential to justify the purchase.

Price

There is no getting around it - the iO8 is expensive. Sure, the iO10 is a lot more with similar features, but it’s still a lot of money. It sits firmly in the premium category, often costing significantly more than mid range electric toothbrushes.

Replacement brush heads are also pricier than standard Oral-B heads, which adds to the long term cost.

However, you are paying for a combination of performance, design and smart features rather than just branding.

Who Should Buy This?

The iO8 is best suited to people who are serious about improving their oral care routine and are willing to invest in a premium product.

It is particularly useful for those who struggle with brushing technique, as the smart tracking and pressure sensor provide real time guidance.

If you simply want a basic electric toothbrush that gets the job done, this is probably more than you need.

Electric Toothbrush Alternatives

If the iO8 feels out of reach, there are plenty of solid alternatives.

Mid range Oral-B models, like the Oral-B iO5 offer similar cleaning performance without the advanced AI features. Sonic brushes from other brands provide a different brushing style that some people prefer.

At the same price point but from Philips, the Sonicare DiamondClean 9000 is an exceptional alternative, using sonic pulse technology which vibrates along the teeth to get the same effect.

What Makes It Different?

The main difference lies in Oral-B’s magnetic drive system, quieter operation and AI tracking. It feels smoother and more refined than older models.

Is It Worth The Price?

If you value smart features, premium design and top tier cleaning performance, the iO8 is a strong investment. If you are happy with a simpler routine, you can get excellent results for much less.

FAQs

  • It depends on the user. If you want to improve your brushing habits, it can be very helpful. If you already have good technique, it may feel unnecessary

  • Yes. The combination of gentle brushing action and pressure feedback makes it one of the more comfortable premium options available.

  • Every three months is the standard recommendation, though the brush will remind you when it is time.
